This is part two of my food tripping adventure with my cousin in New York. (See previous post.) I have long asked her to take me to the Magnolia Bakery.
Why? I'm curious. When I left Manila in 2007, a cupcake bakery has become an instant hit due to blogs and word-of-mouth. But, my! They were selling cupcakes 50 pesos a piece in a third world country! In a newspaper article, the owner is proud to share that she worked for Magnolia Bakery where she learned the techniques of making the best cupcakes. I actually bought those cupcakes and here's my verdict. (Please browse to bottom of that post.)
With my very own eyes, I saw the long line of people waiting for their sweet fix. My cousin and I fell in line and observed one of the bakery workers icing dozens of cupcakes like she's been doing it since birth. One scoop, one smooth swirl of the spatula, done! By the window are three mixers with digital controls. My cousin and I both like to bake no wonder we notice these details.
When we were close to the door and we were told that only 12 cupcakes are allowed to be bought per person. Huwaaat?! There's such a rule? That only means they have reached total stardom in the cupcake business.
I can hardly remember the different flavors I put in my box above. I was in a hurry as I can sense the impatient customers waiting after me. My cousin and I crossed Bleecker and sat by the park. I took my first bite of the sought-after cupcakes. It was okay. I was not overly impressed. I may not have picked the best cupcake flavors they have. I may have gotten the "not-so-good" batch. But all I can say is... "What's popular is not always right. And what's right is not always popular." Hahaha! I know there's nothing right or wrong about eating cupcakes. But, sorry, I just feel like saying something "popular".
